Interrailing 2014: Bucharest, Varna and Sofia

From Budapest, we made our way across to Romania. We didn't stay there for very long, partly because we were so tired from several overnight trains, but I got a few good snaps.

BUCHAREST

^ The famous Parliament Palace, one of the biggest in Europe

VARNA

We had to make a detour to Varna, as we were supposed to be going to Istanbul, but unfortunately the trains in Eastern Europe are very slow and it would have taken about 31 hours to get there! So no, we decided to head to the coast of the Black Sea and find out what it was all about...

^ Look at that sky! Isn't it amazing?

^ Remains of some Turkish baths right in the centre of a residential area!

Varna seems to be quite an up-and-coming beach town. It's got a lot of nice bars and clubs along the coast and as for cultural sights, there are churches, ancient ruins and an impressive naval museum.

We then headed to Bulgaria's capital...

SOFIA

Like Bucharest, we were only in Sofia for the day and we had to lug around our backpacks so we were pretty tired and didn't feel like walking too much! However, we still managed to get glimpses of some of the sights. The cathedral was certainly a sight to behold; I particularly liked the gold accents (thought it was rather grand, I did!)

There was also some really nice gardens with a charming fountain at the centre and a mix of traditional and very modern buildings in one area - we were getting used to this by now. Yes, there was even a Costa Coffee.

Read the final instalment to find out what I got up to in Belgrade, Zagreb and Munich!
